Back to School
Today is the day that parents and children across the country have been looking forward to for weeks, the return to school and the physical classroom!
With children having been at home since the end of last year today marks an important day in the road back to catching up on missed face-to-face learning and helping students settle back into the school environment. While many families will be feeling excited about the return to the classroom, some will no doubt feel anxious about the environment which children will be learning in. Face masks, weekly Covid testing and doors and windows being kept wide open in the classrooms will form a part of the new normal for students returning to school.
After weeks of home learning and, in many cases, very little contact with peers and members outside their household have resulted in increasing anxiety and other mental health issues for some students. England's Chief School Inspector Amanda Spielman has expressed concern over eating disorders and self-harming among some pupils after she said students have suffered "boredom, loneliness, misery and anxiety" during the period of home learning.
Many students and parents will also be worried about the loss of learning they have endured and the gaps in knowledge students will have as a result of the pandemic. Education Secretary Gavin Williams has reported that longer school days, shorter school holidays and potential catch-up sessions offered at breakfast clubs, as suggested by the Labour party, are all measures the government are looking at implementing to address the lost learning students have endured.
We would love to hear your thoughts on children returning to school. Are you feeling excited or worried? And what are your thoughts on the options currently being reviewed by the government in helping students catch up?
